What Is a TFSA? A Beginner’s Guide for Canadians

· admin

A TFSA is a Tax-Free Savings Account. It is an account that can hold savings or investments. It is not a type of investment by itself.

In plain English: This guide explains the main ideas. Rules, prices and tax treatment can change. Check official documents before making a decision.

Who can open one

Age and Canadian residency rules apply. Check the current rules before opening an account.

What contribution room means

Contribution room is the amount you are allowed to add without going over your limit.

How withdrawals work

Money you take out usually becomes new contribution room at the start of the next calendar year, not right away.

Avoid putting in too much

An overcontribution means you added more than your available room. This can lead to a tax.

What you can hold

A TFSA may hold cash, GICs, mutual funds and other eligible investments. Some can lose value.

Emergency savings

Money you may need soon should be easy to reach and not exposed to more risk than you can handle.

Long-term saving

Investments may grow over time, but growth is not guaranteed.

Naming someone to receive the account

Beneficiary and successor-holder rules differ. Ask about the choices and estate effects.

Moving a TFSA

Ask the new bank or provider to arrange a direct transfer. Taking money out and putting it back yourself may cause a contribution problem.

Check your records

Track contributions and withdrawals at every institution. Government records may not show recent transactions.

Questions worth asking
